March 23, 2005 - Big Surf In Manly Beach, Sydney
A big swell hit last night. Early this am it looked like Victory at Sea and no where was really surfable. By early afternoon the wind changed directions and started blowing offshore. We ended up surfing the South end of Manly and then Tony paddled out at a place called Dead Mans which only breaks on big swells. The first 4 pictures are of South Manly and the rest are from Dead Mans.
The pictures from Dead Man's were taken from a cliff about 100ft above sea level, so you really can't get the gist of how big it really was...(Tony claimed there were solid 15ft+ elevator drops). Some surfers were doing tow- ins, and word has it that Kelly Slater flew up from the Bells Beach Rip Curl Pro (postponed because of poor surf) and was ripping Dead Man's earlier in the day, and was being filmed pulling into some deep barrels.
