May 25, 2005 - Driving The East Coast Of The North Island, New Zealand
Finally caught the ferry the other night crossing "The Cook Straight" from the South Island to the North Island. Pulled into Wellington (Capital of New Zealand) at about 11:45 pm and was just exhausted. Ended up staying in Wellington with a friend of the guy whose van I am driving across this country. Woke up first thing and blew out of town in search of waves. Made my way up the East Coast as far as Gisborne. Unfortunately, everywhere was flat and it poured rain all day. Driving conditions were also a bit rough through the mountains as well as many roads being washed out. Pulled into the "Surf Chalet Lodge" in Gisborne after driving about 7 hours. Woke up this am to again NO Surf. Gisborne definitely has potential for some epic waves, but unfortunately there is just no swell at the moment. So again I packed it up and continued to head north up the East Coast. I think I pulled into every surf spot along the way looking to get wet today. I ended up driving about 7 hours and made it as far as the town of Whakatane. Unfortunately, there was absolutely NO Surf again. Starting to feel like a fish out of water! I ended up driving along the entire East Cape and saw some amazing coastlines. All of the pictures below are from my drive today. Not sure where I will go tomorrow. I just may head back to Raglan because I heard there was good surf there today. The journey continues....
