July 5, 2005 - Mana Island, Fiji
Finally escaped Seashell and made it to Mana Island. I ended up leaving Tony behind and came over with my new friends Robin, Ac, Hal, & Caroline. We were all pretty much ready for a change of pace. I also ended up bumping into the Clause family on the ferry who we previously met at Seashell Resort. Robin and Ac are originally from England, but now living in Australia. Hal is from Norway and his girlfriend Caroline is from Australia. I have definitely had a great time hanging out with all of them!
We arrived at Mana Island with open arms. All of the staff at the backpacker's place were very friendly and funny! The main lodge was located on the water front and our dorm rooms were located in the middle of a Fijian Village. It is by no means a fancy place, but definitely has a lot of character which makes up for it. Plus the people that I am here with make it that much better! We even have some of the local cats and dogs sleeping in our dorms. I ended up taking a walk through the village this morning and getting some great shots of the locals. I was offered breakfast, coffee, and even beers! All of the village people are so friendly and hospitable.
As far as Mana Island is concerned, it is extremely beautiful! The beach is made of soft white sand and the water is turquoise blue. The backside of the Island has some of the most amazing coral reefs. We all ended up going for a snorkel which was just a 10 minute walk from our hotel. Tomorrow we are all planning to do an Island hopping tour. The journey continues.....
