July 14, 2005 – Downtown Bangkok, Thailand
Woke up early this am to some serious thunderstorms again, but it eventually stopped after a few hours. First mission of the day was to go out and bargain shop for the best deal on getting about 2000 photos printed. I headed down to Khaosan Road which is full of everything you could possibly want. This street is geared towards Backpackers because of its cheap accommodations and shopping.
After about 5 photo shops and some hard bargaining, I finally got the deal I wanted. Now it was time for lunch! I must say that the Thai food here is soooooooo good. You can go out and get a great meal for about $2.00 US. I have definitely been spoiling myself after being in Fiji where food was just a necessity. Now that I was done with lunch, I decided to head towards the Chao Phraya River for some photo opportunities. You can take a river boat taxi for about $0.07 Cent US which is a great way to see the city. As I started my foot journey, I was approached by a Tuk Tuk Driver who offered to show me around for $0.50 cents US and then drop me at the River Taxi pier. Considering it was so hot and humid, plus I thought it would make for some good video, I gladly took him up on his offer. The one thing that he didn’t mention was that he was going to take me to a local Taylor Shop to buy a suit. The Tuk Tuk drivers get a gas ticket for just taking you by and a commission if you end up purchasing something.
Considering that I had nothing but time on my hands, I thought it might be entertaining to go in and video tape myself haggling with an Indian guy about how expensive it is. After about 10 minutes in the shop, I was over it and out the door. The Tuk Tuk driver looked bummed knowing that I didn’t buy anything. But I did tell him from the start that I was not going to buy anything from anyone.
Finally got to the Chao Phraya River and the next boat was about 10 minutes away. As I sat on the pier, there were thousands of nasty looking fish hanging in the water. They were having a feeding frenzy as tourist threw bread in the water. There were also some local kids swimming in the water. The water in this river is so dirty as well as has a nasty odor to it. There is no way I would ever consider jumping in it. It was a very hazy day, so the quality of the photos from the river is not the greatest. Make sure you look at some of the food items I took pictures of. There’s some pretty interesting stuff. I was planning on staying in Thailand till July 20 and heading to some of the Islands but the rain has changed my decision. I will be heading out of here on Sunday to Bali where it will be sunshine and surf! The journey continues…..
