Day 8 – Boat Trip

Hey there, Nate here as Eddy is burnt on writing these updates. I must say another freaking epic day of surf in Mentawais! We surfed a spot called Iceland’s today, which is a super hooky lefthander. It didn’t look like much from the boat, but when Eddy and I paddled out it was way overhead. The water was an azure blue, simply breathtaking, reminiscent of something whispered in a dream. The wave itself would come in across the reef, jack into a seemingly enormous sparkle hewn peak before exhausting itself across the relatively deep reef. It was mostly just a really big drop, but man…what a drop! The first couple had your heart going most assuredly. As the day progressed the swell seemed to build and the wave connected across the reef quite a bit further. I ended up taking my bigger board out for the second session and was glad to have the extra length. We surfed until it was nearly dark and our arms just wouldn’t push us anymore. One of my last waves I was held up at the top, simply because I didn’t have the paddle power any longer, and barely, just barley, made it to the bottom. As I attempted to bottom turn around a heaving section with my board chattering the entire way the lip made its presence known by exploding across my head! Needless to say I ended up axed and doing an innumerable amount of somersaults under the water. Irrespective I still came up hooting with a smile. Ah, just another day here in paradise!

For those of you that surf I must say that it is imperative to make a trip out to these incredible islands. The sheer volume of waves out here is incomprehensible. We drive by waves without a second thought that would have us screaming for joy at home. Don’t even bother with anywhere else until you make it here. It’s worth forgoing ten trips to Central America to experience these waves, but bring your balls! We have one guy (Ken) on our boat that is just a pussy and I don’t see the point of even coming here if you’re going to back out every wave that comes your way. Anyway, enough of a rant! Have a good one wherever you may be and score some waves!
