Day 10 – Boat Trip
I am sad to say that today is our last surf day here in the Mentawais. It’s has been one of the best surf trips ever in my book! Still can’t get over what a variety of world class waves that the Mentawais have to offer. We have just had such good surf everyday. Everyone is leaving here with money well spent!
As far as the surf today, we ended up going back to Ebay’s early this morning. As it turned out, the wind changed when we arrived and the surf pretty much went to crap. So we headed back to Playgrounds in search of waves.
When we pulled into Playgrounds we checked out a spot called No Can Do’eees. It was just massive and very heavy. The waves were just throwing these big barrels pretty much onto a shallow reef. The pictures below don’t even do it justice to how heavy it really was. Nobody was out the there was a reason why! If you did attempt to surf it, you’d either have the barrel of your life or the biggest beating of your life!
We ended up surfing a Right Hander called “4 Bobs” which was just super fun. The best part about it was that we had it all to ourselves for at least 4 hours. There were lots of boats in the area but no really caught on to how good it really was at 4 Bobs.
After 4 Bobs, we headed around the corner to a place called Hideaways for the evening surf session. A few days ago we looked at this place but the tide was just too low to even consider surfing here. It was now high tide and definitely pumping. From the boat, it didn’t look like it was that heavy of a wave. Once I paddled out and was in the line up it was definitely a different story. The waves were big and the take off was super fast and steep onto a shallow reef. Once again, not much room for error if you didn’t want to get a serious beating! Only a handful of us paddled out and I managed not to take a beating! Rob got pitched over the falls on his first wave but then got an epic barrel for his last wave in the Mentawais. Carrick our 23 year boat captain also got a pretty sick backside barrel but took a beating at the end! See photos below….
Well, I am pretty burned out at the moment from doing these updates. So it’s time to end this chapter. Even though my Mentawais surf trip is over, tomorrow I will be back in Bali to continue my endless summer! The journey continues….
