Note: Because internet connections in Bali are so slow, I have to limit the amount of photos I post. I also have to compress the photos so much that the quality is not the greatest.
Some of you may not be aware but there were recently three Suicide Bombings in Bali. I actually left here a day before the bombs to visit Nici in Australia. I heard about it while I was hiking in the Outback. Apparently three Muslims went into three different restaurants in Bali and blew themselves up with the intention of killing others. Somewhere around 30 people died and many others injured. I have actually walked by one of the restaurants so many times which really hits home. Fortunately, I don’t know anyone who died in the recent bombings. The only positive out of this is that there are 3 less idiots in the world today!
I just pulled back into Bali yesterday from Western Australia. The vibe here is definitely very strange at the moment. There is just a weird feeling in the air that I can’t really put into words. Many of the tourist have left as well as many that were planning to come have canceled there flights. There were only about 30 people on my flight from Perth to Bali. The streets here are vacant and you can just see how bummed many of the locals are because they depend on tourism to make money. It’s so unfortunate because the Balinese are such good people and this will really hurt their pockets. In addition to the recent bombings, today (Oct 12th) is the 3rd Anniversary of the first Bali Night Club bombings that killed about 300 people and injured many others. They had a Ceremony today at the Memorial site in Kuta. The place was covered with police and armored vehicles everywhere. It seemed to just be many of the locals here and hardly any tourist because of the recent bombs that have scared people away. You could just see the look on peoples faces as the thought about the past bombings and now faced with the current situation. So many blank faces…. Below are just a few pics I took today at the Ceremony and the area which will give you an idea what it is like at the moment.
Not sure at the moment what my plans are???? Lots to think about….. I will definitely stay in Indonesia until December but will probably blow out of Bali soon for a week or two. I may head to Sumatra or Java to a few really good surf spots then back to Bali. Tony is also in Indonesia at the moment. He pulled in the day I left but headed to G-Land so he also missed the bombings by a day. I must say that luck follows Tony because he also missed the Tsunami in Thailand last December by a day. Apparently Tony is still in G-land catching some sick waves and we should hopefully hook up by the end of this week. Thanks for your concerns to those of you who emailed me as well as called my sister. Life is short so live it to the fullest everyday! The journey continues…
