Sept 29th – Arriving In Padang, Sumatra
Just flew into Padang today to start the 11-day surf trip around the Mentawais
Islands. I flew in from Bali and the rest of the crew from California (Matt,
Steve, Sal, Tim), Hawaii (Rob), and one English guy (Martin). Dale was also
supposed to come on this trip but had a work issue at the last minute and
had to cancel. Anyway, not much to write at the moment since it’s the
first day here. I will say that I was the only white guy on the flight from
Jakarta to Padang. The plane was full of many Muslims that just stare at
you nonstop. I often found myself in a staring contest to see who would give
in first!
In regards to the surf, apparently there is some decent swells on the way. The Captain has recommended that we head north tonight up to the Telo’s instead of the Mentawais. We should be able to get some good waves and pretty much surf alone without any other Charter boats. So we will do the first half of the trip in the Telo’s and the second half in the Mentawais.
Oh ya, one last thing to add. While we were sleeping in the cabin Steve woke up in the middle of the night and started peeing on the floor. Actually, he was peeing on Tim’s bag. For some reason he woke up in his sleep and started to go in his sleep. We yelled at him and then he kind of freaked out screamed, “where am I”. After that he just jump back into bed and went to sleep like nothing had happened??? Interesting!
