Dec 15th, 2006 - Heading South to Hualien, Taiwan
Busted out of Fulong today and we took the train south to the city of Hualien. Another friend of ours named Tyler lives here and there are more waves in this region of Taiwan. A few things about Taiwan to share….. There are 7Eleven Mini-marts everywhere; nobody speaks English; very interesting cuisine, NO animal part goes to waste; its been raining nonstop since we got here and we are both freezing!
As far as Hualien, it’s cool Big Little city if that makes any sense. Not too many waves to surf in town, but a handful of spots nearby. One of the nice things about Taiwan is that the main driving roads as well as train tracks hug the coast. So you can constantly check for surf spots as you make your way by train or car. There was a festival going on today for the 60th anniversary for one of the Temples in town. Some interesting offerings on display…. The main religion here is Buddhist, but it’s like a Chinese Buddhists. Anyway, I took a handful of photos so enjoy. Oh ya, all of Taiwan seems to be very much into the Christmas spirit even though they really don’t celebrate Christmas. Guess they like he decorations or something….. We rented a car tonight so tomorrow the search begins for some waves.
