December 17th – Somewhere in Taiwan
To protect the innocent, and to not exploit this surf spot, I am just going to call this “Somewhere in Taiwan”. It is on the east coast, and that’s all the info that you get. For those of you who surf, I am sure that you’ll understand why I don’t post the name. There are already too many crowded spots in the world so when you find a secret spot, you keep it a secret….
Ok, now to the wave…. Yes, it was really fun and NO one out. This day was an average day here as far as the surf. It doesn’t always break, but when it does it’s usually a long peeling wave. I was definitely very stoked on the wave. Actually, I was so stoked that I had to surf naked plus I wanted to give the Coast Guard guys something to wonder about since they were watching us! Surf naked is one thing that every surfer must do once in their lifetime, so I chose to do it in Taiwan. A funny thing about surfing in Taiwan is that if the surf is big, the Coast Guard will not let you in the water! They will give you a ticket if you don’t get out. My buddy who lives here says that he usually ignores them till they go just away. Oh ya, I guess there are Sharks in Taiwan. Just after we finished surfing, the local fisherman pulled in a Great White Shark that was about 9ft long! Definitely not the type of fish that I want swimming under me while I’m surfing!
We ended up staying at a guesthouse in the nearby town. So far, everyone here has been so nice and hospitable even though they don’t speak much English. My buddy Tyler who lives here speaks fluent Chinese so it’s been very helpful having him around. The girl from our guesthouse was always looking after us even though she didn’t speak much English. The search continues in Taiwan…
