Feb 13th, 2007 - Surfing In Morocco, North Africa

It’s now been 5 days that I have been here. So far, solid surf everyday! Yesterday and today was at least double overhead and pumping. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos of the surf the past two days. The photos below are from about 3 days ago and in the afternoon. From where I am staying in Taghazout, it takes me about 20 minutes to walk to the point and therefore I don’t want to leave my camera gear on the beach. There are many spots to surf but I’ve mainly been surfing Anchor Point. It’s a peeling right hand point break that reminds of a mix between Rincon, Topanga, and San Miguel. Not a bad mix if you know these spots……

As far as morocco, it is a very different place. It feels strange sometimes listening to the local surfers yell in the water in Arabic. Surf and Arabic just don’t seem to mix with me. There are many nice people here, but then there are also true characters running around. There just seems to be a lot of men out just standing around doing nothing other than staring or hassling you for something. Sometimes I just want to walk somewhere and not be bothered once! You don’t see many women out on the streets, seems that the Moroccan men must have them locked up at home. Going to rent a car in a few days and do some exploring to a few other cities. Definitely going to hit up Marrakech. The journey continues…..
