April 9th, 2007 – Secret Spot, Michoacan, Mainland Mexico
Well, I finally busted out the camera today to get some Tow-In Surfing shots. Corky (The Commander) Crandal arrived last night and was ready to roll before first light. Surfed picked throughout the day. Definitely some bombs rolling through. We checked Nexpa early am just to see if we could pick off a few lefts. Nexpa was big, closing out, and just disorganized. So we headed to our secret spot (Cobbles) and found what we expected, perfect peeling rights as usual and alone again. I’ve been here for 5 days now and I have yet to paddle into a wave. Just been towing in everyday and cherry picking my waves. I’m all over this Tow In surfing…. You get into the wave early, deep, and with lots of speed. The one thing that you don’t realize at times is how big the wave is actually going to be until you are already on it and pretty much committed. Next thing you know you’re flying down this huge wall of water making the sections.
It’s definitely a team effort between you and the Jet Ski driver because he decides where to pull you into the wave as well as you hope he’s there to pick you up once it’s over. It’s so much fun that I better shut up…We all took a few beatings today by not getting picked up and then getting a pounding by the next sets. Waves were ranging from double to triple overhead. On one of my waves Corky came to pick me up and I missed grabbing the rescue sled by two inches. He had to abort the pick up so I got left behind for a pounding. You only have a few seconds to be picked up since you don’t want to risk the Jet Ski from getting hit by a wave. Check out the pics below, which pretty much tells the story.
Oh ya, one more thing… After this session as the swell started peaking and the wind turned onshore, we loaded the ski and truck with all the gear and headed to Petacalco where we knew the wind would be offshore. Petacalco would hopefully be the only spot on the coast to hold that size (17ft @ 20 sec intervals). The next posting after this will continue with our arrival at Petacalco. Be sure not to miss it! The journey continues…..
