April 10th, 2007 – Big Tuesday, Petacalco-Mainland Mexico

After yesterday’s historical event, we all went back to Fortino’s house in Petacalco. I busted out my laptop and we watched what had just been accomplished! Pretty amazing to look back at it. Did this really just happen??? Fortino put us all up for the night at his house and his wife even cooked us a traditional 5 course Mexican meal. I’ve met a lot of great people in my travels so far, but I would definitely have to say that Fortino really touched me! He’s just a truly good person and you know it from the moment you speak with him! I know that we all went to bed wondering what today would be like? Will it be bigger, smaller, windy, clean, etc, etc, etc…. So many variables to take into consideration when riding waves in which a simple mistake could cost you your life. Surfline was forecasting today (Big Tuesday) to be the peak of this historical swell, but it would only last for a few hours.

We pulled up early this morning to find the wind blowing offshore and the waves even bigger than yesterday. The Commander (Corky) and Juan quickly launched the Jet Ski and headed off to check out the conditions up close. It took the rest of us about 15 more minutes to load up the boat and get to the waves. Once we pulled up, Juan and Corky were nowhere to be found. The only thing we found were these Massive Waves breaking everywhere. About 30 minutes went by and still no sign of Juan, Corky, or the Jet Ski. Bad thoughts were starting to go threw all of our minds. Did they get taken out by a wave was the big question. Just a simple engine stall on the Jet Ski in the wrong place could cost them their lives. We were trying to scan the coastline to see if the ski had been dragged to shore. There was definitely no way you would survive if you got dragged by one of these massive walls of water and then tossed into the deadly shore break which was like a blender on high speed. I was actually starting to feel a little sick to my stomach with worries. I couldn’t even imagine the thought of having to go back and tell Juan or Corky’s family that they had been killed. Fortino and Kevincio were going to go to shore and walk the beach to see if they had been washed up while the rest of us would head out to sea in search. Just as we were getting ready to make a move, Juan and Corky showed up. As it turns out, Juan wanted to just check out another spot down the coast that he had always wondered about. I guess he lost track of time and didn’t realize the worry he gave all of us!

After studying the waves, The Commander and Juan headed out to conquer these mountains. Corky’s first wave was definitely big, but small in comparison to what would be coming his way. Just like yesterday, they worked their way into these waves gaining more and more confidence with every ride. I will mention one thing, which was just after The Commanders first wave Juan was there to pick him up. But just as he got on the rescue sled another mountain of white water was coming their way. Juan quickly punched the Jet Ski with full throttle trying to out run this giant. The wave was actually catching up to him as we were all yelling on the boat hoping he would out run it. He did out run it, but it was definitely a very close call. This just goes back to what I said in a previous posting about how important it is for the driver to be there when the wave ends. Just a few seconds can cost you your life in conditions like today. It also goes to show you how fast theses waves actually are since the Jet Ski barely out ran it! After about 4 or 5 waves, the Commander caught a massive set wave. I would have to say that it was about 30ft or so. From the boat, all we could see at first was just the tracks that Corky had left on the wave. When I look back at the pics, I still can’t believe the wave he caught! We were all just praying that he made it since all we could see was just his tracks on the wave for a while. After that massive wave, Fortino (Mexican Legend) decided he was going to give it a go. The Commander was now driving the Ski and he asked Fortino “Due you want a Small, Medium, or Big one?”. Fortino answered “Big One”, so he got pulled into a big one, which you will see below. The conditions were getting windy and very bumpy so after Fortino caught two waves we called it a day!

I must say that the past two days was an incredible experience for all of us to be a part of. The Commander definitely made surfing history today by riding the Biggest wave ever at Petacalco. Fortino also made history today by riding the Biggest wave ever at Petacalco for a local guy! On top of that, a few more of the old legends showed up to see this historical event! The pics below tell it all. The journey continues….
