July 29, 2007 – Nembrala, Rote, West Timor
We’ve been here a few days now and I must say that this place is awesome! It very primitive, reminds me of what Bali was probably like 30 years ago. The main religion here is Christianity, so there are churches everywhere as well as pics of Jesus on all of the cars. The locals here are completely the opposite from the locals in Bali. Nobody hassles you for anything, nobody trying to sell you anything, and nobody asking for money! Am I still in Indonesia???
The surf has been great, and there is only one local surfer here who barely surfs. Hard thought to imagine, but it’s true. Woolly and I paddled out about 6 am the past two days and have been surfing pretty much alone for the first hour. Then a few other surfers pop in and out. The wave here is called T-Land. A very long peeling left that is so much fun. It changes a little with the swells and tides, so sometimes there are barrels, extremely long rides, etc….
As far as our accommodation, it’s pretty basic! We are paying $10.00 USD per day, and that includes 3 meals plus our room! It’s a great cheap trip! Below are just a few scenic shots from Nembrala and our beach out front. I will try to get some surf pics soon. The wave breaks about æ mile out from the shore so you can either walk out on low tide or take a boat on high tide. The journey continues….
