August 2, 2006 – Exploring Rote, West Timor
After today’s morning surf, Woolly and I decided to rent some motorbikes and explore the Island. We started off from Nembrala and headed north along the coast. Then we crossed over to the east side and worked our way back. It was about a 3-hour journey and well worth it.
We drove through many small villages
where all of the people were just so friendly. Everyone would come out
and wave. All of the kids yelling “Hello
Mister” and wanting their photo taken. Nobody asking for money, nobody
trying to sell anything, just friendly people. I don’t think too many
white skin people roll through these areas. Today’s journey was just
a great experience to see the local culture and how people live so simple,
but very happy!
Towards the end of the journey we stopped at a beach called Boa, which apparently
has a really nice right hand wave to surf. See pics below, nobody out and
looking pretty good! Once we got back to Nembrala we cruised by Bugga's house
to fiend some locals running a squid business on his land. Lets just say
that the smell there was pretty back down wind! Well, enjoy the pics. The
journey continues….
